    He was accused of skewing intelligence concerning the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War.
    He was subjected to investigations targeting involvement he may have had with the Iran-Contra scandal.
    Due to the Iran-Contra affair, he withdrew his candidacy for Director of the CIA (1987).
    Many saw him as a Bush loyalist due to his close relationship with George H.W. Bush.
    Some felt he lacked the necessary military experience to be Secretary of Defense.
    He served in the United States Air Force.
    He earned a Ph.D. in Russian/Soviet history from Georgetown University.
    He lectured at several prestigious colleges and universities.
    He achieved the highest rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
    The Senate confirmed him by a vote of 95-2 to replace Donald Rumsfeld as the Secretary of Defense.
    The only two 'no' votes he received were from right wing Senators Rick Santorum and Jim Bunning.
    He said he had a problem with some of Rumsfeld's actions as Secretary of Defense.
