Why he might be annoying:

    He refused to participate in the 1979 All-Star Game after he found out he wasn't in the starting lineup.
    His arrogance made him reviled by Cardinals fans and teammates alike.
    He flipped the middle finger to some heckling fans, which prompted his manager, Whitey Herzog to physically escort him off the field.
    He was embroiled in a contract dispute with the Padres front office upon shortly after his trade.
    Despite being a mainstay for the Padres, the team unceremoniously traded him to the Mets in his final season (1991).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was traded to the Padres for Ozzie Smith, in a move that paid dividends for both teams.
    He was one of the first recipients of the Silver Slugger Award (1980).
    He was a member of the first Padres team to reach the World Series (1984).
    He was the first switch hitter in major league history to record 100 hits each on both sides of the plate.
    He was the Padres team captain for the last four seasons of his tenure with the team.
