    Born in La Ferte-Milon, France
    Wrote plays ‘Andromaque’ (1667), ‘Britannicus’ (1669), ‘Iphigenie’ (1674), ‘Phedre’ (1677) and ‘Esther’ (1689)

Why he might be annoying:

    Many of his characters are lovesick fools.
    He betrayed his producer and loyal supporter Moliere for a rival company.
    He also seduced Moliere’s leading lady.
    He and rival Pierre Corneille often wrote plays based on the same plot.
    He abandoned playwriting for years after being mocked in a sonnet.
    His very religious wife never saw any of his plays.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is frequently regarded as France’s greatest tragic dramatist.
    He had lost both parents by age four.
    His plays often feature complex female characters.
    He was the first French author to support himself mainly with his writing.
    He was appointed royal historian to Louis XIV.
    Several of his sons and daughters joined religious orders.
