    He was the second manager to be part of a trade since the Jimmy Dykes-Joe Gordon trade in the 1960s.
    He was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated along with two managers and three sports coaches that were fired (June 6, 1988).
    He was fired three times as manager.
    His managing record in his final season in Pittsburgh was 57-104.
    He managed awful Braves teams in his final managing years.

    He was the only Milwaukee Brave to hit a home run on the first career at-bat.
    He used unrelenting optimism, which spread through his teams.
    He managed the Pirates to win the 1979 World Series.

    He tossed the ceremonial first pitch prior to the 2006 All-Star Game.
    He opened a restaurant in his hometown.
