Why he might be annoying:

He was accused of exaggerating in his accounts.
Both the years of his birth and death have been disputed (and have been reported as 1800 and 1866 respectively).
He was married multiple times and may have engaged in polygamy (and had numerous recorded children by them between expeditions).
He apparently abandoned his Indian wives when he returned to white settlements in 1833.
He took part in several military campaigns against American Indian tribes in his later years, resulting in the Cheyenne tribes barring him from trading with them.
He was rumored to have been poisoned by members of the Crow tribe who reportedly distrusted him over his involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre (although some have claimed this was an act of revenge by a jealous ex-wife).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was mixed-race and born into slavery to an Irish owner.
He was famously known as 'Bloody Arm' because of his skill as a fighter.
He traveled with Hugh Glass and witnessed his famously surviving a grizzly bear attack.
He established a route through the Sierras for Easterners en route to California after gold was discovered there in 1848.
He improved the Trail, which thousands of settlers followed to central California (it is now named in his honor).
He saw a resurgence during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s which celebrated him as an early African-American pioneer.
He has been featured as a role model in children's literature and textbooks.
