    His music crosses over from country into pop.
    Most of his songs are depressing and are about break-ups or failed romances.
    He formed a band in high school called the Apparitions.
    He attended college in Atlanta where he studied pre-law. Although he was awarded a comprehensive scholarship, he decided to become a full-time musician instead.
    After 1992, he wasn't able to break into the country Top 10.
    He was born blind from congenital glaucoma.
    He developed a hybrid of pop and country that brought him a larger audience.
    He scored 35 No. 1 hits and an additional 14 Top 10 singles on Billboard's country chart.
    He was in the Top 10 for 15 straight years.
    His son, Todd, is his road manager.
