Baseball Player
    (April 22, 1918-September 24, 2008)
    Born in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania
Birth name was John Barton Vernon
First baseman for the Washington Senators (1939-43,1946-48,1950-55), Cleveland Indians (1949-50,1958), Boston Red Sox (1956-57), Milwaukee Braves (1959) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1960)
    Career batting average of .286
    172 home runs, 1,311 RBIs
    Seven-time All-Star (1946,1948,1953-56,1958)
Bill James wrote, 'Mickey Vernon had one of the most inconsistent careers of any player who ever played the game.'
He edged out Al Rosen for the 1946 batting title on the last day of the season when his teammates, learning that Rosen had had his last at bat and was one point behind Vernon, deliberately got themselves out in the ninth inning to ensure that Vernon would not have to bat again.
He managed the expansion Washington Senators to two last place finishes (1961-62) before being replaced.
    He batted and threw left-handed.
Despite losing two seasons to WWII military service, he set AL records among first basemen for career games, putouts, assists and total chances.
He got more votes for the 1955 All-Star Team than any player except Mickey Mantle.
