He collapsed on court during a playoff game against the Charlotte Hornets (April 29, 1993).
When an initial team of cardiologists concluded that he should stop playing, he and his wife slipped out of the hospital literally under cover of darkness and sought a second opinion.
After two more teams of cardiologists came up with conflicting opinions on the severity of his condition, he was told to avoid stressful activities pending further tests.
Despite the instructions, he reportedly planned to play a full court pick-up game at Brandeis. (He never got the chance, collapsing during warm-ups before he had even broken a sweat.)
The Wall Street Journal ran an article claiming that cocaine abuse contributed to his death.
A week after his number was retired by the Celtics, the banner was stolen from the rafters of Boston Garden. (It was later recovered from the duffel bag of the thief, a high school student.)

He was named Celtics team captain after the retirement of Larry Bird.
He was the first Celtic in franchise history to have 100 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 steals and 100 blocks in a single season.
He was active in charities in Boston and his native Baltimore.
Each year at Thanksgiving, he gave away 500 turkeys to needy people in Boston.
The doctor who performed his autopsy testified that there was no evidence he had used cocaine.
