Why he might be annoying
He was writing a gossip column at age 14.
Actress Barbara Wilde, who appeared in 'Death Wish 3,' said 'The atmosphere on set was drenched in fear. Mr. Winner spent most of his time shouting at everyone, except Charles Bronson of course.'
Helen Mirren called him 'sexist' and said he treated her 'like a piece of meat' during a 1964 audition.
Critic Francesca Newland said of his commercials for esure, 'They stand out for their awfulness.'
He turned down an OBE, saying the award is 'what you get if you clean the toilets well at King's Cross Station.'
Why he might not be annoying
He usually finished films on time and under budget.
He helped establish the police memorial trust after constable Yvonne Fletcher was shot and killed while monitoring a protest outside the Libyan embassy (1984).
He almost had to have a leg amputated after contracting vibrio bacteria from bad oysters, then caught the 'superbug' MRSA while recovering (2007).
He commented, 'When I tell people I've slept with more than 130 women, they're appalled, but, you know, I've been doing it for 55 years so I don't think that's bad going.'
