Animal
    Born in United States
    Former pet alligator
Was abandoned in Lake Machado at Harbor Regional Park in Los Angeles, California (August, 2005)
Was captured after numerous failed attempts and relocated to a local zoo (May 24, 2007)
He was assumed to be male despite his actual gender being unknown.
He was an illegal pet who was dumped into the lake after he grew too large for his owners' garden pond.
After he was first sighted in the lake, numerous attempts by authorities and wildlife experts to capture him were unsuccessful.
His situation caused bickering and conflict among some of the wildlife specialists.
There were many alleged sightings of him before his capture, some of them not being reported to authorities.
He disappeared from public view for a time and was feared dead of starvation.
After he reappeared nearly eighteen months later, a fence was built around the lake for his protection as well as his spectators' and fans'.
He was captured after he happened to appear on land during a meeting to discuss plans to catch him.
It was suggested that other alligators besides Reggie might have been abandoned in the lake.
Before his death, Steve Irwin was one of the animal experts interested in assisting with Reggie's capture.
He received much attention from admirers and the media regarding his capture.
After his capture, he was transported to the Los Angeles Zoo to become a resident.
He was adopted by Los Angeles Harbor College as a mascot.
He became a folk hero and was the subject of memorabilia, songs, websites and children's books.
His former owners were arrested and charged for legal issues regarding possessing and abandoning Reggie.
