    Wrote 'Black Mask (1933),' 'The Big Sleep (1939),' 'Lady in the Lake (1943),' 'Double Indemnity (1944)' and The Blue Dahlia (1946)'

Why he might be annoying:

    His wife was much older than he was when he got married.
    Even though it helped make him rich, he had a very low esteem for Hollywood.
    He started selling his stories while in his 40's.
    He lost a vice president position at an oil company for being almost constantly drunk.
    He adopted British citizenship (1907) and then reverted back to being an American years later (1956).
    He attempted suicide.
    His final book was unfinished when he died and had to be finished by a fan years later.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His books had to be toned down and censored for film.
    He encouraged Bond creator Ian Fleming to write.
    He created the noir detective Philip Marlowe.
    All of his novels were eventually adapted for film.
    He suffered with a painful nervous disorder towards the end of his life.
    He is considered a significant influence in crime fiction and film noir.
