Won three O. Henry Awards (1980, 1981, and 1985)

Why he might be annoying:

He was estranged from his father.
At the age of 10, he changed his name to Jack (after Jack London).
He won a scholarship to an elite school but was expelled after it was revealed he forged his transcripts and recommendation letters.
He claimed in an interview he doesn't take plagiarism seriously, mainly because 'it’s rather flattering to be plagiarized' and 'the very act of plagiarizing means that you have confessed an inability to do something on your own, which is a pretty harsh verdict to bring on yourself.'

He said: 'You cannot be a writer if you're not a reader.'
His childhood in the 1950s, including his relationship with his abusive stepfather, made for his first memoir, 'This Boy’s Life,' which was made into a film with in Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio in 1993.
He served in the military as a paratrooper during the Vietnam War.
As a reporter for The Washington Post he worked with Carl Bernstein during Watergate.
He was a writer in residence at Syracuse University, where he taught from 1980 to 1997.
He was bestowed the National Medal of Arts by President Obama in 2015.
He cites his literary influences to be Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell and Ayn Rand.
