    Collections include ‘Drawn and Quartered (1942),’ ‘Addams and Evil (1947),’ ‘Monster Rally (1950),’ ‘Night Crawlers (1957),’ ‘Black Maria (1960),’ ‘The Groaning Board (1964),’ ‘Favorite Haunts (1976)’ and ‘Creature Comforts (1981)’
    Inspired the ‘Addams Family’ TV series and films
    Nickname was ‘Chill’

Why he might be annoying:

    His cartoons are morbid.
    As a child, he enjoyed jumping out of a dumbwaiter and scaring the hell out of his grandmother.
    He was accused of breaking into a house and vandalizing it as a teenager.
    He collected torture instruments, skulls and other macabre knickknacks.
    He got married in a pet cemetery.
    He would answer fan mail on letterhead from ‘The Gotham Rest Home for Mental Defectives.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    His cartoons are witty and dark-humored.
    He was prolific, making enough money to support himself at just $35 per cartoon.
    Boris Karloff liked his work, and thanked Addams for ‘immortalizing’ him as the butler Lurch.
    An art scholarship named after him is given to students who attended his high school.
    ‘The Munsters’ was a shameless rip-off of his ‘Addams Family’ characters.
    He influenced Gary Larson, Lemony Snicket and many other ‘altogether ooky’ cartoonists and writers.
    He died of a heart attack while driving a car in 1988.
    When asked how he’d like to be remembered, he said: ‘As a good cartoonist.’
