Although the family name comes from Protestant ancestors who had escaped to Holland, he was raised as a Catholic.
He was an intern during Francois Mitterrand's unsuccessful 1974 presidential campaign.
He lost his bid for re-election to the National Assembly in the so-called 'Blue Wave' conservative referendum.
He fathered four children with his political partner Segolene Royal out of wedlock.
His affair with journalist Valerie Trierweiler went public just days after he broke up with Royal.
His policies are socialist in every sense of the word.
A tabloid reported he had cheated on his current partner Valerie Trierweiler, who allegedly was hospitalized because of the rumors. (January 10, 2014)

He supports same-sex marriage.
He is an ardent supporter of renewable energy resources.
Ironically, his father shared the opposite of his political views.
