    (March 27, 1886-August 17, 1969)
Birth name was Maria Ludwig Michael Mies
Designed the German Pavilion at the Barcelona Exposition (1929), Lakeshore Drive Apartments in Chicago (1951), Crown Hall at the Illinois Institute of Technology (1956), the Seagram Building in New York (1958) and the New National Gallery in Berlin (1968)
His mottoes were 'Less is more' and 'God is in the details'
He added 'van der Rohe' to his name to assume an aristocratic air with his upper-class clients.
He described the role of modern architecture by saying, 'We knew it was a question of truth. We tried to find out what truth really was.'
In the hands of lesser imitators, his minimalist style produced a series of boring glass boxes.
After the rise of the Nazis, he was unable to work in his native land because his style was 'not German' in character.
The Seagram Building was chosen by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 'Proudest Achievements of American Architecture.'
