Why they might be annoying:

    They seemed to be known more for wearing red than their accomplishments. They are often times called the Reds, Red Devils and Red Army.
    Their fans constantly sing during the game.
    When the Football League was formed they declined to be part of it (1888). They join the Football League, four years later, in 1892.
    Names such as Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic were rejected prior to selecting Manchester United (April/May 1902).
    The club almost folded, until a local brewer, John Henry Davies (Manchester Brewery Company), invested in them.
    In a weird twist, two days before playing their first game at Old Trafford, their former Bank Street stadium was destroyed by a wind storm (February 17, 1910).
    They lost their first home game at Old Trafford, to Liverpool, 4-3 (February 19, 1910).
    Germany bombed their stadium during WW II (March 11, 1941).
    Two of their members Enoch West and Sandy Turnbull were banned for life, for fixing games.
    Their FAQ advises that 'none' of the players have e-mail addresses.
    They sold David Beckham to Real Madrid for 25 million pounds (July 2003).
    In the 1930's, they opened a season losing their first twelve games
    During the 1930's crowd support dwindled, at one game only 3500 watched.
    They were unable to pay their players and flirted with bankruptcy (December 1932).
    Team manager Tom Docherty was fired for moving his lover Mary, who was the wife of the club physiotherapist Laurie Brown, into his home (1977).

Why they might not be annoying:

    They are the highest valued sports club, even topping the New York Yankees.
    Although it plays in the third most populous city in England, it is England's most popular team (by comparison Manchester has 1/3 the population of London)
    It is one of the most search for teams on the Internet.
    Their FAQ advises 'We do not send signed shirts or flowers for coffins, if supplied with a name, address and name of the deceased we shall send a letter of condolence from the Manager.'
    83,260 fans attended a United versus Arsenal game at Maine Road (1948)
    They purchased Leeds United's Rio Ferdinand for 30 million pounds (July 2002)
    Former player Sandy Turnbull was killed during WW I (May 1917).
    When they returned to play after a four year absene due to WW I, the team had all new players except for two.
    Matt Busby managed the team for twenty-five years (1945-70).
    Eight of their players were killed in a plane crash (February 6, 1958).
