U.S. Senator
    (September 4, 1929-March 4, 2007)
    Born in St. Louis, Missouri
    Missouri Attorney General (1961-65)
    Missouri Lieutenant Governor (1965-68)
    Senator from Missouri (1968-87)
Chosen by George McGovern as his Vice-Presidential candidate (1972)
He withdrew as the Vice-Presidential nominee after it was revealed that he had been hospitalized for depression three times and had twice undergone electroshock therapy.
He said that he did not disclose his medical history to McGovern because he did not think it was important, but his wife had warned him that the health issue would be raised if he was nominated.
Despite claiming that he saw no disgrace in mental illness, each of his hospitalizations was announced to the press as a treatment for gastritis.
Ironically, his cover story caused its own problems: rumors that his gastritis was caused by heavy drinking.
When the Rams were moving from Los Angeles to St. Louis, he described the city to team owners as 'a raucous Des Moines.'
McGovern said he supported Eagleton '1,000%' then forced him to quit.
McGovern later said he had made a mistake and should have kept Eagleton on the ticket.
Commentator Jack Anderson retracted a column that falsely claimed Eagleton had been arrested for drunk driving (1972).
His niece and her lawyer were arrested for blackmail after threatening to spread false accusations that he was bisexual (1980).
He was instrumental in Senate passage of the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.
He was married to his wife Barbara for 51 years until his death.
