The Resume

    (November 3, 1963- )
    Born in St. Louis, Missouri
Birth name was Philip Davis Guggenheim
Directed episodes of 'NYPD Blue,' 'ER,' '24,' 'Alias,' and 'Deadwood'
Directed the films 'Gossip' (2000) and 'Grace' (2008)
Directed the documentary films 'An Inconvenient Truth' (2006), 'It Might Get Loud' (2008), 'Waiting for Superman' (2010), 'From the Sky Down' (2011), 'The Road We've Traveled' (2012), and 'He Named Me Malala' (2015)

Why he might be annoying:

He said that when he graduated college, 'I remember thinking that there was no future in documentaries.'
His forays into fiction have not been nearly as successful as his documentaries.
He appeared in an ad for the Gap.
In an interview with Piers Morgan, he claimed to be unable to think of anything negative about Barack Obama -- except that the President's awesomeness was so immense that he had been unable to capture all of it in 'The Road We've Traveled.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was described by one reviewer as 'Michael Moore after anger management therapy. He's pissed off, but he's not going to scream in your face.'
He said, 'When I made 'An Inconvenient Truth,' I really thought about my cousins in Ohio that are Republicans. I didn't want to make a movie about climate change and convince people who were already convinced. I wanted reasonable people who resisted knowing about it to open their minds.'
Salon noted, 'He turned a slide show by a famously boring former politician into an Oscar-winning documentary.'
