Musicians
    (1971- )
    Donald Fagen (January 10, 1948- , Keyboardist/Vocalist)
    Walter Becker (February 20, 1950-September 3, 2017, Guitarist/Bassist)
Recorded 'Do It Again,' 'Reeling in The Years,' 'Dirty Work,' 'My Old School,' 'Babylon Sisters,' 'Black Friday,' 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number,' 'Bothisattwa,' 'Your Gold Teeth,' 'King Of The World,' 'Kid Charlemenge,' 'The Royal Scam,' 'Don't Take Me Alive,' 'FM,' 'Peg,' 'Josie,' 'Aja,' 'Deacon Blues,' 'Hey 19,' 'Chase The Dragon' and 'Bad Sneakers'
They took the name 'Steely Dan' from a reference in William S. Burroughs' book 'Naked Lunch' about a steam-powered sex toy (dildo).
Other names considered were 'Ultimate Spinach and the 'Leather Canary.'
In 1970, they made the soundtrack to the very low budget Richard Pryor movie, 'You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It' (try finding it).
They went to promote their first album by touring in 1973. It was a complete flop.
In 1975, tired of opening for metal bands, they quit the concert circuit and were strictly studio musicians.
With each album they use a different musical line-up, with only Fagen and Becker the band's constants (they used a total of 139 different musicians).
In 1980, after an album release, they abruptly quit.
Afterwards Becker must deal with his drug problem and the suicide of his long-time girlfriend, Karen Stanley.
Their early musical influences include Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Oliver Nelson, Charlie Mingus, Clifford Brown, Thelonious Monk, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan & The Band, Motown, Dionne Warwick and John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful.
They refused to be labeled as a band with a certain sound, mixing jazz, R&B, Rock, Blues, Soul, Reggae, Pop and Progressive.
In the mid '90s they began touring again to critical and financial success with a strong fan base following.
In 2000 they released their first album in 20 years, 'Two Against Nature.'
In 2001, having never won a Grammy before, they took home three for Album of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Group, and Best Pop Vocal Album ('Two Against Nature').
They have won 12 gold records, eight platinum records and one multi-platinum record.
They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2001).
