    Director and screenwriter of 'The Great McGinty' (1940), 'The Lady Eve' (1941), 'Sullivan's Travels' (1941), 'The Palm Beach Story' (1942), 'The Miracle of Morgan's Creek' (1944), 'Hail the Conquering Hero' (1944) and 'Unfaithfully Yours' (1948)
    The studios billed him as the first writer to direct his own screenplays, but he had actually been preceded by Howard Hawks and Frank Capra.
    Two of his marriages ended with divorce, one with an annulment.
    He drank heavily.
    The IRS placed a lien on his properties (1953).
    He died while writing his autobiography, which he had given the working title 'The Events Leading Up To My Death.'
    His screenplay for 'The Power and the Glory,' which told the story of a powerful mogul through a series of flashbacks and flashforwards, was influential on 'Citizen Kane.'
    He was the first screenwriter paid a percentage of the profits from a film.
    He sold the screenplay for 'The Great McGinty' for $1 in exchange for the director's job.
    He won the first Oscar for original screenplay (1940).
    Four of his films were chosen for AFI's list '100 Years, 100 Laughs.'
