    Representative from New York (1969-88)
    He was charged with accepting free vacations from Brooklyn Democratic bigwig Meade Esposito in return for using his influence to help a ship repair company that was one of the largest clients of Esposito's insurance agency.
    He was convicted of accepting an illegal gratuity and obstruction of justice (1987), and sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined $500,000.
    In a separate investigation, he was accused of demanding stock payments from Wedtech, a defense contractor, in return for political favors.
    He was convicted of 15 felonies, including racketeering and extortion (1988), and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
    He resigned from Congress one step ahead of being expelled (August 5, 1988).
    He was released from jail early because his lawyer claimed he was suffering life-threatening heart disease (1991).
    He somehow recovered quickly enough to make an unsuccessful run for his old Congressional seat (1992).
    He was married to Marie Wassil for 57 years.
    He was one of the most decorated officers in NYPD history.
    He was wounded in the line of duty eleven times.
    He was left with a permanent limp after rescuing a woman on a runaway horse (1946).
    As a Congressman, he was known for providing excellent constituent services.
    He won passage of a law banning armor-piercing 'cop killer' bullets.
    He was so popular that in many elections he was nominated by both the Democratic and Republican parties.
