    Wrote 'The Grass Is Singing' (1950), the 'Children of Violence' series (1952-69), 'The Golden Notebook' (1962), 'Briefing for a Descent into Hell' (1971), the 'Canopus in Argos' series (1979-83), 'The Good Terrorist' (1985), 'The Fifth Child' (1988), 'Love, Again' (1996) and 'The Cleft' (2007)
    Won the Nobel Prize for Literature (2007)
    At 14, she left school on sick leave and refused to go back.
    After being married and divorced twice, she commented that marriage 'is not one of my talents.'
    She was a Communist.
    After she won the Nobel Prize, critic Harold Bloom said, 'I find her work for the past 15 years quite unreadable... fourth-rate science-fiction.'
    She said of her childhood, raised by British parents in Rhodesia, 'you couldn't have a luckier combination' for a future novelist.
    She left the Communist movement (1954).
    Because of her outspokenness on apartheid, she and her books were banned from South Africa and Rhodesia (1956).
    After critics attacked her portrayal of female anger and aggression in 'The Golden Notebook,' she said 'Apparently what many women were thinking, feeling and experiencing came as a great surprise.'
    She said, 'Science fiction is some of the best social fiction of our time.'
