    (October 16, 1915-March 11, 1974)
    Born in Villisca, Iowa
Starred as ‘Captain Video: Master of the Stratosphere (pictured)’ and ‘Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe’ (serial series)
Committed suicide by headshot, age 58
If you wonder why his 'Commando is sometimes referred to as Commander Cody, this guy didn't help matters.
He ended up with some very minor and sometimes uncredited TV parts.
In a bizarre irony, he played the lead role in ‘Commando Cody’ while Richard Crane played his sidekick; in ‘Rocky Jones Space Ranger,’ Crane was the lead and he appeared briefly in only two episodes.
On Commando Cody: ‘The mask was the studio’s way of insuring against my wanting more money someday and threatening to walk away from the series. Some economy-minded official had the brilliant idea that the actor could always be replaced as long as the mask remained.’
Once he got out of acting, he went into insurance sales.
He was the son of an Iowa farmer and one of 10 children.
At least he had a decent middle name for the times (Clifton).
He followed up a stint in the Coast Guard with significant modeling jobs.
His younger brother referred to his piercing glance with arched eyebrows as ‘a normal expression.’
While he was an escort for many leading and supporting ladies of the time, he never married.
He eventually became a bookkeeper for a commercial agent.
