Why he might be annoying:

He changed the spelling of his name from 'Thoroughgood' to 'Thurgood.'
As a Supreme Court Justice, he exhibited sarcasm towards struggling lawyers arguing before him.
After William Rehnquist complained a criminal's appeals were too costly, he said, 'It would have been cheaper to shoot him right after he was arrested, wouldn't it?'
As a justice, he was the strongest supporter of the controversial topic 'Affirmative Action.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He co-sponsored, argued and won the landmark 'Brown v. Board of Education' case before the Supreme Court (1954).
He was rejected from University of Maryland Law School due to the color of his skin.
He helped to eradicate segregation from graduate schools down to elementary schools.
As an advocate, he argued against white-only primary elections and restrictive covenants.
He fought for the civil rights movement through legal means, and won 29 cases before the Supreme Court.
He defined 'equal' as 'getting the same thing, at the same time and in the same place.'
The 'Thurgood Marshall Foundation' provides scholarships and funding for 38 traditionally black colleges and universities.
He was the first African-American Supreme Court Justice.
He was the grandson of a slave.
