Why he might be annoying:

He looks like the uncle in the family nobody ever brings up.
In the 1950's he claimed to be a spokesman for SINA (Society for Indecency to Naked Animals), claiming that unclothed animals were causing the moral decay of humanity.
It was a total spoof, but he was convincing enough to get booked on some local talk shows.
He left 'Get Smart' in 1967 to create a series about a nebbish super hero, 'Captain Nice.' It only lasted 15 episodes.
Other failures include 'Quark (1978)' about an outer space garbage collector (9 episodes) and the short-lived Saturday Night Live rip-off 'The New Show (1984).'
He did several Saturday Night Live sketches playing Uncle Roy, a child pervert.

Why he might not be annoying:

He joined the U.S. Army (1952-54) and toured Germany, performing in a musical comedy he created with the Seventh Army Repertory Company.
    He graduated from Dartmouth College.
He wrote material for 'The Steve Allen Show' and 'The Garry Moore Show.'
He received an Oscar nomination for 'The Graduate.'
Between 1976-80 he hosted Saturday Night Live 10 times (and guest appeared in 5 more).
In his directing debut, the 1978 film 'Heaven Can Wait' starring Warren Beatty (who co-directed), he received an Oscar nomination.
As a teen he was in the Broadway production of 'Life With Father (1947).' Then, 52 years later he was on Broadway again in the production 'Art (1999).'
