Conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra (1912-1940)
Founded the New York City Symphony Orchestra (1944)
Arranged and conducted the music for 'Fantasia (1940)'

Why he might be annoying:

He married three times.
He was a prima donna.
For no apparent reason, he had an Eastern European accent even though he was born and raised in England.
He confused people by saying he was born in 1887 instead of 1882.
He re-orchestrated classics by Bach and Mozart so they would appeal to contemporary audiences.
He upstaged the music by throwing cheap theatrics into his conducting style.
He would occasionally throw the sheet music to the floor to illustrate that he didn't need it to conduct.
He demanded that all the lighting in the concert hall be focused on his head and hands only.
He did not use a baton.
At age 94, he signed a six-year recording contract. He died a year later.

Why he might not be annoying:

He attended the Royal College of Music when he was thirteen years old.
He was not afraid to experiment with his orchestra.
He and Walt Disney planned the animation masterpiece 'Fantasia' (1940).
His orchestras were known for their rich, lush sound.
He turned the Philadelphia Orchestra from a completely unknown local orchestra into one of the world's most famous.
While working on 'Fantasia,' he created one of the first stereo sound systems.
