    (circa 1205-1255)
    Born in Mongolia
    Son of Jochi
    Fought against Jin Empire
    Invaded Russia (1237-1241), Poland (1240-1241), Hungary (April 11, 1241-1242), and Croatia (1241-1242)
Khan of Khanate of the Golden Horde (1227-1255)
    Died in Sarai Batu, Russia
During his conquest of Russia, he burned Moscow (1237–1238), Kiev (December 1240), and other Russian cities to the ground and massacred their inhabitants.
He first treated the people he conquered with great brutality.
He had tense relations with his cousin Güyük.
He nearly took over Western Europe, including Austria, Italy, and the Holy Roman Empire, but was halted by the death of his uncle Ögedei Khan.
He probably killed his cousin Güyük’s envoy right after his death, before they got a chance to meet together.
He later became more tolerant toward the people he conquered, allowing local authorities under his control some authority as long as they remained loyal to him.
He and his troops lived in awesome yellow tents, hence the name ‘Golden Horde’.
His invasion of Europe bridged the Western world with the Far East.
His khanate, the Golden Horde, was the longest-ruling khanate of the Mongol Empire.
