Why he might be annoying:

One of his nicknames was Roach.
Despite being drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 1945 NFL Draft, he never played for the team.
He appeared as the Marlboro Man in cigarette ads.
He has been snubbed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
He was on two NFL Championship losing teams (1958-1959).
He set a Giants record for career interceptions (167).

He served in World War II, fighting in the Battle of Guam as a Marine.
In college, he established records for passing yards, consecutive passes with no interception and pass completions.
He was also a college baseball player.
He earned All-American honors while attending the University of Mississippi.
He was the NFL's 'Rookie of the Year' (1948).
He had several Giants passing records before Phil Simms broke them.
He got the Giants to defeat the Chicago Bears in the 1956 NFL Championship with a big score of 47-7.
A trophy for Mississippi's top college players, the Conerly Trophy, was named after him.
