The Resume

    (July 24, 1928-January 11, 2010)
Born in The Bronx, New York
    Life Magazine photographer
    Photographed James Dean in 1955
Photo Collections include ‘Jazz Street’ (1960) and ‘California Trip’ (1970)
    Portrayed by Robert Pattinson

Why he might be annoying:

He’s better known for his association with James Dean than he is for any of his other work.
In ‘Photography After Frank,’ Philip Gefter wrote: ‘I always considered his work more soulful than influential’ (whatever that means).
He left the Magnum Photo Agency to start his own film company but ended up returning to Magnum in less than a year.
Many think that Robert Pattinson was miscast playing him in the 2015 movie ‘Life,’ with Stock’s widow Susan Richards saying: ‘That wasn’t the man I knew.’
Dane DeHaan actually looked more like Dennis than Pattinson, whom many thought would have been the more logical choice to portray James Dean (maybe if they switched parts, the movie wouldn’t have bombed commercially).

Why he might not be annoying:

He lost his father when he was sixteen.
He served in the United States Army post-World War II.
He won first prize in a Life magazine competition for young photographers in 1951.
His portrait of James Dean walking through Times Square is now a definitive and iconic image.
He spent years photographing Jazz subjects, including Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday.
He taught in Scandinavia and Japan as well as across the US, in his later years.
A photo portrait of him holding a camera to his shadowed face so the lens appeared as his right eye and the viewfinder his left eye is among the best-known pictures ever to appear in Life Magazine.
