Why he might be annoying:

    The year of his birth has also been given as 1925 and 1927.
    He seized power from President Ahmed Ben Bella in a coup (June 19, 1965).
    He abolished the constitution and ruled through a Revolutionary Council of military officers.
    He rallied the rest of the Arab world in opposing Anwar Sadat’s peace treaty with Israel.
    He was a chain smoker.
    He had such bad teeth that he asked camera operators to focus on the mic instead of his face during press conferences.

    He was credited with bringing political stability and economic growth to the country.
    He became a supporter of women’s rights after his 1973 marriage.
    His funeral was the largest in Algerian history.
