Vocalist

The Resume

    (January 1, 1958- )
    Born in Portland, Oregon
    Singer, actress, songwriter, and playwright
Stage debut was in the first National Tour of 'The Wiz,' as Dorothy, at the Ahmanson Theatre
Released two studio albums, 'Out of the Woods' (1979) and 'Azz Izz' (1982)
Acted in 'Car Wash,' 'Youngblood,' 'Hair,' 'The Jerk,' 'Xanadu,' 'Nine to Five,' 'The Brother from Another Planet,' 'Jumpin' Jack Flash,' and 'Church'
Best known as Fanta in the Emmy Award-winning TV mini-series, 'Roots,' opposite John Amos (1977)
Played the recurring role of Edie in the final season of 'Beauty and the Beast' (1989)
Guest-starred on episodes of 'What's Happening!!,' 'Lou Grant,' 'Hill Street Blues,' 'The Jeffersons,' 'Roc,' and 'NYPD Blue'
Staged her own one-woman semi-autobiographical musical, 'Sold,' at the Music Center in collaboration with Gordon Davidson

Why she might be annoying:

She played a teacher in the Sabrina the Teenage Witch pilot.
Her role in 'Nine to Five' was cut down to virtually nothing.
She acted in the disastrous 'Xanadu' movie, widely panned as one of the worst films ever made.
She shares a first name with an abrasive cartoon Chihuahua who acted like Peter Lorre.
She decided, mid-way through her career, to attach an extra '-n' to said first name (and occasionally removes the '-s' from her last name in billings).
She later explained the change by saying 'I returned [to the industry in 2006] and asked my webmaster to purchase my domain name. He informed me it already has been purchased by an upscale furniture store in London, England!'
Her debut solo album was initially supposed to be produced by Maurice White, but due to the label being in transition, it ended up being produced by Earth, Wind & Fire's Al McKay.
The minimal role she and other black performers played in the film version of 'Hair' irked many devotees of the original musical, who argued that Milos Forman had shied away from depicting the play's interracial subtexts.

Why she might not be annoying:

She began singing at the age of six, attaining stardom by the age of ten.
She performed a Christmas show in the very last tour of duty with Bob Hope during the Vietnam War.
Robert Zemeckis would later choose to include a TV clip of the Christmas performance with in his historical film epic, 'Forrest Gump' (1994).
She had memorable roles in two beloved 70s cult musicals; 'Car Wash' and 'Hair.'
Fans of the musical have been known to prefer her renditions of 'Aquarius' and 'Let the Sunshine In' over the more popular covers by Fifth Harmony.
She was on the same level as Dionne Warwick and Gladys Knight, but never achieved their levels of fame.
She was personally selected to performe for Robert Altman and 150 guests at the Magic Castle's Courage Award ceremony in 2006.
She was chosen by Robert Iger to be the opening vocalist for the prestigious Legends Awards Ceremony, when Sir Elton John was inducted.
Her play, 'Sold,' was chosen by Kennedy Center's Writers Program as one of 18 plays (out of 2,000 reviewed) to be developed for a theatrical production.
She commented on her experience making 'Car Wash' by saying: 'I don't care how upset I am - I'll hear something from Car Wash, and a big old smile comes on my face... And that is a GIFT!'
