For a while he was merely a pretty boy and not a serious actor.
He was featured in a commercial for the GAP.
He did a make-up commercial with Madonna.
He almost drowned as a child.

He has taken on more difficult roles to become a respected actor instead of just a sex symbol.
His roles have varied from a terrorist to St. Francis of Assisi.
He loves animals and married a veterinarian.
He served in the Italian military.
To recover from the trauma of his near drowning, he took swimming lessons and went on to be a champion swimmer.
He opposes the death penalty.
