Religious Figure
    (December 9, 1579-November 3, 1639)
    Born in Lima, Peru
Patron saint of hairdressers, public health workers and people of mixed race
He referred to himself as a 'mulatto dog.'
When his Dominican priory ran into financial trouble, he suggested that they sell him into slavery.
He flagellated himself three times every night.
He became so lost in prayer that he failed to notice the chapel catching fire.
His piety and reputation for miracles prompted the Dominicans to drop the racial barrier on admission to the Order.
He founded an orphanage and a children's hospital.
When his Superior reprimanded him for disobeying orders by bringing a poor Indian who had been stabbed to the monastery for care, he replied, 'Please instruct me for I did not know that obedience took precedence over charity.'
