The Resume

    (September 17, 1907-October 7, 1999)
    Born in Beaumont, Texas
    Birth name was Helen Rulfs
Appeared on Broadway in 'Los Angeles' (1927-28), 'Death Takes a Holiday' (1931), 'Berlin' (1931-32), and 'The Fatal Alibi' (1932)
Acted in 'Jewel Robbery (1932),' 'I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932),' 'The Wedding Night (1935),' 'Private Worlds (1935),' 'Two Against the World (1936),' 'In Name Only (1939),' 'Enemy Agent (1940),' 'Torrid Zone (1940),' 'Nothing But the Truth (1941),' and 'The Thin Man Goes Home (1945)'

Why she might be annoying:

She eloped with her first husband and then left him.
She was typecast as unfaithful wives, mistresses, and backstabbing best friends.
Her highly publicized marriage to Wimbledon champ Fred Perry ended in divorce after only three years.
Her career faded in the late 1940's, prompting her to marry a third time to a wealthy socialite (third time the charm - they stayed married for thirty years until his death).
She once joked: 'Hollywood seemed to be an absolute sea of short men. Robinson, Muni, Cagney and George Raft all had to stand on boxes when they acted with me!'

Why she might not be annoying:

She was an avid equestrian who owned several horses.
Her best performances were given in the Pre-Hays Code era unrestricted by censors.
She regretted her quick leap from Broadway to Hollywood, lamenting: 'If I'd stayed in New York longer, I'd be getting a much bigger salary out here now.'
She made several films in the United Kingdom during her marriage to Fred Perry.
She got one of the most memorable end scenes of any movie in 'Chain Gang' when (in a rare 'nice girl' part) she asks wrongfully convicted felon Paul Muni how he is able to live, and he replies - as the screen fades to black - 'I Steal!'
