The Resume

Attained fame on radio as the voice of Philip Marlowe in close to 120 radio plays
Had starring roles on prominent radio programs, 'The Adventures of Bill Lance,' 'The Whistler,' 'Damon Runyon Theater,' and 'Frontier Town'
Made recurring radio appearances on 'The Jack Benny Program,' 'Our Miss Brooks,' 'The Shadow of Fu Manchu,' 'Box 13,' 'Escape,' 'My Friend Irma,' and 'Lux Radio Theatre'
Acted in the films 'Lady of Burlesque,' 'The Notorious Lone Wolf,' 'Jungle Girl,' 'Danger,' 'Dangerous Business,' 'The Truth About Murder,' 'The Detective Story,' 'The Ring,' 'The Sniper,' 'Invasion U.S.A.,' 'Guns, Girls, and Gangsters,' 'This Rebel Breed,' and 'Funny Girl'
Portrayed Christopher Storm in the short-lived TV series, 'Foreign Intrigue' (1954-1955)
Voiced both Reed Richards in 'The Fantastic Four' cartoon series (1967) and Green Lantern in the 1968 animated series 'Aquaman'

Why he might be annoying:

He was yet another 'poor man's Humphrey Bogart.'
He was unable to break away from being typecast as hard-boiled film noir gangsters.
He lost custody of his son and property in his divorce proceedings (Jul. 1957).
When his ex-wife appealed to Santa Monica Superior Court, a year later, for an increase in child support payments from Mohr, she ended up getting a $10 per week reduction instead.
Like George Raft, Dennis Morgan , and Dick Powell, he usually ended up either getting Bogart's leftovers or turning down/losing out on roles Bogart made popular.
He fought with his studio to be released from his contract, but they refused to do so due to the strong box office showings for his 'Lone Wolf' film serials.
When the studio neglected to renew an option by just one day, he took advantage of the loophole to get himself released and cast in the 'The Detective Story' with Kirk Douglas (this led to other offers, but he would never be a leading man again).
His press agent wrote of him: 'This young fellow is going to be one of the great star names of Hollywood - and that soon. I know I've made guesses before and wound up with egg splattered all over this pretty face, but this time I'll make book. This is a prediction and a promise. This guy... I repeat, will be a star.' (Bonus points for consistency on the 'egg thing.')

Why he might not be annoying:

His father was killed in a workplace accident when he was only five years old.
He was raised by his mother and his grandfather, who was a former colleague of Sigmund Freud.
He had ambitions to be a doctor, as a young man, but a prolonged appendicitis attack killed his aspirations.
He was a player in Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre in New York City.
He and Alan Ladd had small roles in live-action portions of Disney's 'The Reluctant Dragon.'
His voice was named as the Best Male Actor on Radio by 'Radio and Television Life' magazine (1949).
He worked with blacklisted filmmakers on the King Brothers' 'The Ring,' which was one of the first films to tackle segregation, stereotypes, and racism against Mexican-Americans.
He had to put up with a young Barbara Streisand's diva behavior during the filming of 'Funny Girl.'
He is one of the few voice actors to portray superheroes from both DC Comics and Marvel Comics (Green Lantern and Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards).
He had a hilarious guest spot on I Love Lucy as a psychologist who hits on Lucy to help her get out of her 'inferiority complex' (infuriating Ricky, whose idea it was in the first place).
There is an extremely cool website dedicated to his science fiction movies.
