The Resume

    (August 5, 1962-September 19, 2015)
    Filmed in Miami, Florida
    Aired on Univision
Aired Saturday nights in a three-hour block
    Hosted by Don Francisco
'Giant Saturday'or 'Gigantic Saturday' in English
Mix of contests, human-interest stories, and live entertainment
Holds the record for longest-running Spanish-language program
Drew an estimated 100 million viewers worldwide

Why Sabado Gigante might be annoying:

Its host performed comedic stunts in a suit and tie.
It couldn't settle on whether it wanted to be a talk show, a variety show, or a game show.
The show was technically sexist - objectifying female models and audience members.
The 'Miss Colita' segment saw contestants parade in thongs for audience members to vote on who had the best 'culita' (ass).
Much of its humor, while not deemed offensive at the time, hasn't aged well (fat shaming, gay stereotypes, questionably racist sketches).
The character Dona Concha was written out of the show's skits after the actor was jailed on child porn possession charges in 2009.
It was cancelled amid reports that it was dipping in the Nielsen ratings, especially with younger viewers.

Why Sabado Gigante might not be annoying:

It is the world's longest-running TV variety show.
Its popularity elevated Univision to a top-tier network.
Francisco missed only one Saturday broadcast during its run (1974 - when his mother died).
It got in early on the careers of Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, and J Balvin.
Two sitting Presidents (Bush and Obama) made interview stops for the show.
Several of the show's models went on to have successful careers (think the Deal or No Deal briefcase models).
It was a Saturday night staple with Spanish households for decades.
It had so many wild and fun segments that made it a hit with audiences of all backgrounds (the singing challenge, the lie detector skits, the car games, the animal acts, etc.).
It tackled serious topics such as gay marriage and illegal immigration.
