    (June 22, 1910-December 18, 1995)
    Born in Berlin, Germany
    Designed the first working programmable computer, the Z3 (1941)
    Designed the first high-level programming language, Plankalkul (1948)
    Suggested in 'Calculating Space' (1969) that the universe is run on a grid of computers
    During World War II, his work was used to design control systems for German glide bombs.
    He built the Z3 with discarded telephone relays, having rejected more compact vacuum tubes as 'a crazy idea.'
    His computer company had to be sold to Siemmens Electronics after running into financial difficulties (1967).
    He did not get around to publishing a complete description of Plankalkul until 1972.
    He founded the world's first computer start-up company, Zuse Ingenieurburo Hopferau (1946).
    IBM recognized the importance of his work and leased his patents (1946).
    He wrote the first computer chess program.
