    Born in Detroit, Michigan
    Decathlete
President of the US Olympic Committee (1929-52) and International Olympic Committee (1952-72)
He said, 'I am fed up to the ears with women as track and field competitors.... As swimmers and divers, girls are as beautiful and adroit as they are ineffective and unpleasing on the track' (1936).
He said proposals to protest Nazi policies by boycotting the Berlin Olympics were the work of 'radicals and Communists.'
He allegedly pressured US coaches to replace the only Jews on the US track team with Jesse Owens and Ralph Metcalfe in the 4x100 meter relay (1936).

He donated his personal art collection to the city of San Francisco, where it formed the nucleus of the Asian Art Museum.
Sportswriter Red Smith quipped he was 'the official target of abuse in every Olympic year since the invention of the discus.'
