Religious Figure
    (circa 347-September 14, 407)
    Born in Antioch, Syria
    Catholic priest and bishop
Considered one of the greatest of the early Church Fathers
Canonized saint and Doctor of the Church
Creator of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, the liturgy used by the Orthodox and most eastern rite Catholic Churches for their masses
    Archbishop of Constantinople
Some believe he was anti-Semitic due to his sermons against Judaizing Christians.
He disliked sports and the theater.
He led a mob that destroyed the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
His extreme fasting permanently damaged his stomach and kidneys.
He lived the life he preached; living life as a hermit at some times and living simply as an ascetic all times.
    He memorized the entire Bible.
He worked very hard to help the poor and founded a series of hospitals.
He criticized his own Catholic Church about spending money on expensive churches, vestments and utensils for the Mass while people went hungry.
Chrysostom means 'golden mouthed' or 'golden tongue' in Greek, and he was called this in recognition of his superb preaching and oratory.
He gave the rich a hard time and once said, 'It is not possible to be wealthy and just at the same time.'
He ticked off rich people in and out of the Church so bad that he was banished twice from Constantinople.
He left behind a huge body of writings; letters, sermons, etc., that help understand his times.
