    Born in Le Cateau-Cambresis, France
    Leader of the Fauves ('wild beasts') art movement
    Works include 'Woman with a Hat' (1905), 'The Red Room' (1908), 'La Danse' (1909), 'The Yellow Curtain' (1915), 'Yellow Odalisque' (1927), 'Le Lanceur de Couteaux' (1943), 'The Plum Blossoms' (1948), 'Le Negresse' (1952) and 'The Snail' (1953)

Why he might be annoying:

    He had a daughter out of wedlock.
    His painting 'Blue Nude' was burned in effigy (1913).
    His 'Le Bateau' was displayed at the Museum of Modern Art for 47 days before curators realized it was hanging upside down (1961).

Why he might not be annoying:

    His bold use of color was influenced by Japanese art.
    After an abdominal operation left him unable to stand in front an easel (1941), he took up collage, which he called 'painting with scissors.'
    He was the only artist that Picasso considered an equal.
