    Born in San Diego, California
    Drafted 1st overall by the San Diego Padres in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft
    Played in the minor league systems for the San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays
    His baseball career was plagued by legal and personal problems.
    His selection was made with controversy as the Padres passed on future All-Stars Justin Verlander, Jeff Niemann, Jered Weaver and Stephen Drew to take him with the top pick.
    He was arrested for underage drinking and assaulting a bouncer at a bar upon being drafted (2004).
    He was charged for assaulting a friend in a drunken rage outside a high school, which played a key role in his trade to Toronto (2009).
    His surly behavior and rap sheet led to his release from the Blue Jays (2009).
    He was charged with driving under the influence and failing to remain at the scene of an accident, after he hit an elderly man with a teammate's vehicle (2012).
    He accepted a plea deal which resulted in three years of jail time (December 14, 2012).
    He was drafted by his hometown team.
    He voluntarily made the switch from playing the infield to pitcher, citing it would help his development as a player.
    He was the first shortstop since A-Rod to be taken with the first overall pick.
