    (September 6, 1957- )
    Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
27th Governor General of Canada (representative of head of state Queen Elizabeth II)
Previously a reporter and broadcaster for the CBC and Radio Canada
She became governor general despite having no political experience.
There are rumors that she supports Quebec separatism and is friendly with former FLQ terrorists.
On the other hand, she was criticized for saying Quebecers are ‘sometimes disconnected from the rest of Canada.’
Many protested her appointment because of her French citizenship (through marriage).
She was estranged from her father for years.
She is Canada’s first black governor general.
She gave up her French citizenship shortly after her appointment.
Her father was tortured by Papa Doc Duvalier's secret police, and her family fled Haiti in the 1960s.
She helped found several women’s shelters across Canada.
Unlike most governor generals, she got to wield real power when she agreed to suspend parliament to prevent the Harper government from being overthrown by a coalition of three opposing parties (December 2008).
