Why he might be annoying
He was criticized by his political opponents and Western countries for presiding over an autocratic, corrupt government.
He opposed the free-market economic reform policies of Czech politician Václav Klaus.
As a result, Slovakia under his rule was alienated from the Western world.
He banned the use of Hungarian in official documents and road signs.
He even defamed Roma (Gypsies).
He was accused of kidnapping president Michal Kováč’s son with the use of the Slovak secret service (1996).
He put restrictions on the media by increasing the value-added tax on magazines and newspapers that carry more than 10% advertising on the page content (1997).
His decision to exchange ethnic minorities with Hungary was criticized by the international community (1997).
A member of the human rights group Charter 77 said that he has an ‘excellent, evil, political mind’.
Why he might not be annoying
He was a boxer.
He supported Alexander Dubček’s reforms (1968).
He was kicked out of the Communist Party for delivering a speech calling for reform during the previous year (1970).
He was subsequently added to the list of enemies of the socialist regime by the Communist Party Central Committee.
He successfully negotiated with Vacláv Klaus over Slovakia’s independence.
He has won more general elections than any post-Communist leader in Central and Eastern Europe.
