    (November 19, 1828-June 18, 1858)
    Born in Varanasi, India
Born to a Brahmin family as Manikarnika
    Nicknamed 'Chhabili', meaning 'playful'
Queen of the princely state of Jhansi (1842-June 18, 1858)
One of the main leaders of the 1857 Indian Mutiny
Killed during a British attack on Gwalior, India
She got married at the age of 13 or 14.
Her husband was most likely much older than she was, which was typical back then.
She often carried her adopted son behind her back whenever she went to battle, even when she was charging towards enemies.
There was a disputed claim that she was involved in a massacre of Europeans at a fort by a few Bengal soldiers.
A British army doctor called her the 'Jezebel of India'.
Her army lacked much experience with fighting artillery.
Her mother died when she was four.
She was more independent than her peers during her childhood, learning several subjects like archery, horseback riding, and self-defense.
Her biological son died four months after his birth. (1842)
The British refused to recognize her adopted son as her husband's heir, annexing Jhansi into their rule in the process.
Her troops consisted of both men and women.
She made a daring and successful escape from the besieged Jhansi Fort by strapping her son on her back as she rode on her horse. (April 2, 1858)
Her opponent, Sir Hugh Rose, held her in high regard, calling her 'the bravest and greatest commander among the mutineers'.
She has been referred to as India's Joan of Arc or William Wallace.
