Why he might be annoying:

He cheated on his wife with gospel singer Clara Ward.
He charged up to $4,000 for public appearances.
He was accused of using his church as a front for wild orgies.
The New Bethel Baptist church's reputation was such a badly kept secret that even Ray Charles later called it 'a sex circus.’
Several of Aretha's biographers have attributed her pregnancy at the age of 12 to the licentious environment he fostered. (Rumors that he had fathered the baby were proven untrue, but it reflected poorly on his own character that it was even considered plausible.)
When his second (estranged) wife, Barbara Siggers, died of a heart attack, he did not attend the funeral.

Why he might not be annoying:

Aretha most certainly inherited her powerful singing voice from him.
He encouraged Aretha with her singing career, and took her as a child with him on speaking tours and musical engagements .
He would integrate his bluesy style of Gospel music into his sermons - an innovation for the time.
He was active in the Civil Rights movement and was good friends with Martin Luther King.
He was shot twice at point blank range in what was likely an attempted home robbery (June 10, 1979). He was in a coma for five years as a result.
His sermon 'The Eagle Stirreth Her Nest' was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress (2011).
