The Resume

    (February 3, 1943-May 8, 1982)
    Birth name was Neil Bogatz
General manager of Buddah Records (1968-73)
Founder and chairman of Casablanca Records (1973-80)
Founder and chairman of Boardwalk Records (1980-82)
Business motto was 'Whatever it takes'
Died of lymphomas at age 39
KISS album 'Creatures of the Night' (1982) dedicated to him

Why he might be annoying:

He was a lounge singer on a cruise ship in the the early 1960's know as Neil Scott.
Under his direction Buddah Records introduced bubblegum music in the late '60s, signing such acts as Ohio Express and 1910 Fruitgum Co.
He wanted to call Casablanca Records 'Emerald City,' but MGM held the rights to 'The Wizard of Oz' and nixed the idea.
Since the Humphrey Bogart film 'Casablanca' was owned by WB (his business partners), and his last name being, well, you get the idea.
He was a major influence on the rise (and subsequent fall) of disco music.
He sold his company outright to PolyGram, awash in a sea of red ink.
He only signed one act to his new record label, Joan Jett, before succumbing to cancer.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a student of Brooklyn's High School of the Performing Arts (the 'Fame' school).
He made millions of dollars for Buddah Records, but got out when he saw the changing direction of music.
Freely admitting he didn't 'get them,' but admiring their passion toward rock & roll, he made superstars out of KISS.
He turned an unknown German-based singer named Donna Summer into the 'Queen of Disco.'
He introduced Meco to 'Star Wars' fans, George Clinton & P-Funk to white audiences and the 'Y.M.C.A.' to countless wedding receptions.
His widow, along with Grammy winning songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, established the Neil Bogart Memorial Fund for cancer research at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (1984).
