    He dropped out of Regis High School and the Pratt Institute, but later received honorary diplomas from both.
    He became a heavy drinker in his teens.
    While married to his first wife, he conducted an affair with Shirley MacLaine.
    His stint as editor of the New York Post lasted only five weeks.

    He worked for Robert F. Kennedy’s Presidential campaign and was one of the men who wrestled the gun away from Sirhan Sirhan after the assassination.
    He made Nixon’s enemies list for suggesting that the President shared blame for the Kent State shooting by calling college anti-war protesters ‘bums.’
    He won a Grammy for writing the liner notes to Bob Dylan’s album ‘Blood on the Tracks.’ (1975)
    His autobiography ‘A Drinking Life’ (1994) inspired Frank McCourt to finish his own memoirs, ‘Angela’s Ashes.’
    He witnessed the collapse of the World Trade Center on 9/11, then spent nine days covering the story for the Daily News.
    He said, ‘To be a newspaperman is one of the best educations in the world.’
