Wrote the poetry collections 'Poemas exactos a mi misma' (1937), 'Poema en veinte surcos' (1938), 'Canción de la verdad sencilla' (1939), and 'El mar y tú: otros poemas' (1954)
Died of pneumonia at a hospital in Harlem
Reburied at the Municipal Cemetery of Carolina
Why she might be annoying
She was twice divorced.
She caused a scandal by openly living with her lover Juan Isidro Jiménez Grullón after her first divorce, a practice deemed unthinkable to Puerto Rican society at that time.
She lapsed further into depression and alcoholism after her second divorce.
Some of her poems have an inclination towards the erotic.
She was initially given a pauper's burial at Hart Island because no one could identify her and claim her body.
Why she might not be annoying
She advocated for the rights of women and blacks.
She promoted the works of Afro-Carribean authors, encouraging them to turn to their African heritage for inspiration instead of merely copying western literary traditions.
Half of her twelve siblings didn't survive to adulthood due to extreme poverty.
She wrote against Fascism in Spain.
She took up menial jobs when living in New York City.
Her poems address the social problems women faced, her feelings regarding her life situations, and the grandeur of the Puerto Rico landscape in the midst of modernization.
