When she was ten, Lord Protector Edward Seymour attempted to arrange her marriage to Edward VI, but was executed for treason first.
Although she was fourth in line for the throne, Edward VI passed over his half-sisters to name her his heir.
After nine days, she was deposed and replaced by Mary I.
She called the Catholic Church 'the golden idol,' 'the whore of Babylon' and 'the abominable idol.'
She knew Latin, Greek, Hebrew, French and Italian and was described by historian Alison Weir as 'one of the finest female minds of the century.'
She was a pawn of various nobles rather than an active usurper of the throne.
Recognizing this, Mary was initially inclined to be lenient with her.
She was only executed after her father rashly joined in a revolt against Mary's planned marriage to the king of Spain.
Her mother saved her own life while making no effort to rescue Jane.
