The Resume

    (March 2, 1810-July 20, 1903)
    Born in Carpineto Romano, Italy
Birth name was Vicenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci
256th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church (1878-1903)

Why he might be annoying:

Several cardinals were reportedly hoping for a short papacy after Pius IX's record-setting reign, and voted for him based on his age (68) and allegedly poor health.
During his papacy, relations with the Italian government deteriorated to the point that he considered moving his residence to the Austrian cities of Trieste or Salzburg.
He said, 'It is quite unlawful to demand, defend, or to grant unconditional freedom of thought or speech, of writing or worship, as if these were so many rights given by nature to man.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was considered a great diplomat and improved Church relations with Russia, Germany, France and Britain.
He was frugal in his personal life and distributed large sums to charity.
At his own expense, he provided costly astronomical instruments for the Vatican observatory.
He was the first pope to have a sound recording and a motion picture of him made.
